Banana Peel Tea with Cacao

A friend recently posted on Facebook that if you’re having trouble getting sleep to try Banana Peel Tea. It was a simple recipe, one banana sliced in half or quarters and a cup of water. Boil for about 10 minutes. This was the way to a good night’s sleep. For me, I generally sleep well. But I wanted to test this out to see if I would find myself sleeping more soundly. I have to say, I couldn’t tell the difference. So on to reading the benefits of drinking a tea made from the whole banana.

Banana peels are high in antioxidants which fights cancer tumor growth and lutein found in the peels assists with night vision, other nutrients assist in protecting red blood cells which deliver oxygen to your body and the magnesium also contained in the banana shield helps to relax your blood vessels and muscles. This was a trigger for me. I have challenges with my blood pressure getting high. My diet is plant-based and I get enough sleep. I don’t exercise as regularly as I’d like to. I have been drinking it more for this reason. And I have to say I have noticed a difference in my blood pressure. The most recent reading was 119/82, down from the 140 to 150 systolic range. 

The taste of it is good. I don’t add any sugar. Recently, as you’ll see in the picture, I added cacao powder and cinnamon. Since the weather has gotten cold here in Birmingham, this gave me a reason to try something a little different. I don’t usually like hot chocolate or cocoa because it’s generally made with dairy milk and lots of sugar. This tea for me has the right amount of sweetener from the banana itself. I usually let the banana get a little brown as it gets sweeter the more ripe it gets.

Banana Peel Tea with Cacao

Cacao Banana Peel Tea


1 ripe banana, medium (organic is possible or washed well)

1 cup water or non-dairy milk

2 tablespoons cacao powder

1 cinnamon stick or teaspoon (optional)

Put all ingredients in a pot of water, bring to a soft boil for about 10 minutes. Pour in mug and enjoy!

    That does not sound yummy. I was going to say that I’m glad I don’t struggle with sleeping so I wouldn’t have to try it. lol. 😀 I’m sure there is lots of good in it. Who know? I might try it some day. We like these flavoured banana chips that we’ve switched to because we don’t want to eat potato chips any more.

  4. This is great. Is this good for children also? I have a 2 year old and a 7 year old. Would it be okay for both of them?

    For me, my problem is not sleeping, it’s waking up. Needing some more energy!!! 🙂

    It should be okay for children as long as they aren’t allergic. Think of it as an infused water with added health benefits.

    It’s amazing how some things (i.e. food, white water rafting) may not seem appealing from the look or sound of it. Oh but when you give it a try, you say to yourself, “That was fun” or “I so enjoyed that” or “I wish I had known about this sooner”. Since your family likes banana chips, give this a try by slicing the banana after it has steeped. Allow to cool, then eat as is or sprinkle with a little cinnamon. Let me know what you think.
