Health Me Up: My Blood Building Smoothie

Blood Builder Smoothie with Garlic 09.22.14Recently, I donated blood after not giving for over 5 years. The main reason I stopped was because the experience turned somewhat painful and it was something I really didn’t want to endure again. I had, after all, felt I did my duty by giving my one gallon over the years. Since making changes to create a healthier lifestyle, I figured I would give it another try. All went well.

I later thought, what foods could I eat to help the process of replacing my red blood cells and keeping my body strong. Research shows that foods high in iron, Vitamin C, Vitamins B-2 (Riboflavin), B-6, B-9 (Folic acid) and plenty of fluids helps to build red blood cells.

Today, I made a smoothie that includes loads of vitamins, minerals and nutrients my body needs as it continue to rebuild.

I’ve listed the foods in my smoothie and their benefits.

Collards are rich in many vital B-complex groups of minerals such as niacin (vitamin B-3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5), pyridoxine (vitamin B-6) and riboflavin. Further, the leaves and stems are good in minerals like iron, calcium, copper, manganese, selenium and zinc.

Turnip greens may be of special benefit to those who suffer from Rheumatoid arthritis as it has high levels of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Calcium and Copper which all have been proven beneficial in the fight against Rheumatoid arthritis.

Kale is high in iron. It’s a great anti-inflammatory food, high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C and calcium.

Oranges are high in potassium to help regulate the heart and calcium for strong bones and teeth.

Beets – rich in iron, niacin, potassium, copper and Vitamin C. Lowers blood pressure, increase stamina, and blood purifier.

Lime – Loaded with Vitamin C, calcium, folate. Helps to reduce the signs of aging. Limes are anti-carcinogenic and may help to lower cholesterol.

Bananas – high in potassium. Bananas reduce swelling, protect against type II diabetes, aid weight loss, strengthen the nervous system, and help with the production of white blood cells, all due to high levels of vitamin B-6. Bananas strengthen your blood and relieve anemia with the added iron.

Garlic is medicinal herb that helps to lower cholesterol, cancer risk, lowers blood pressure, and blood cleanser.

Hemp seeds – One of nature’s Super Food, It’s a complete protein. Raw hemp provides a broad spectrum of health benefits, including: weight loss, increased and sustained energy, rapid recovery from disease or injury, lowered cholesterol and blood pressure, reduced inflammation, improvement in circulation and immune system as well as natural blood sugar control.

Coconut water – The ultimate thirst quencher and offers a tasty alternative to water. Clears and tones skin, good source of potassium, lowers blood pressure. Coconut water contains five essential electrolytes that are present in the human body. These include: calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and sodium.

Put all in a blender and enjoy.
