Manly Maca Chocolate Smoothie

 

Today’s smoothie is made with men in mind. June is Men’s Health month, so this treat is dedicated to the health of the men in our lives.

Maca root an herbaceous plant and member of the cruciferous family, like broccoli and cabbage, collard greens and kale but due to it’s unique properties it considered one of the world’s natural “super foods.” The tuber looks more like a radish and resembles the taste of a slightly sweet potato. Maca is grown high in the mountains of South America, mainly in high altitude regions of Peru, and get this, it has been around for over three thousand years.

Maca has been consumed for thousands of years for its medicinal and nutritional benefits. In recent months, my husband and I have been using it as part of our morning breakfast routine in our smoothies. I have experienced a decrease in my menopausal symptoms. No hot flashes or night sweats!

Because maca has a long list of amazing benefits, I wanted to highlight a few of them:

Vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients
Maca is a rich source of vitamins (B, C,& E), minerals (magnesium, calcium, iron, & copper), enzymes, amino acids (20 different kinds — that’s just about all of them!), and antioxidants. It also supplies carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, protein, plant sterols and dietary fiber.

Sexual function, libido, and fertility
Maca has long been used to promote sexual function of both men and women. It’s thought to boost libido and increase endurance. It has also been used to balance the hormones and increase fertility.

For men, it helps to support healthy testosterone levels, which increase stamina and energy. Which is why it’s included in this post’s smoothie recipe.

Menstrual issues and menopause
Maca has been shown to work well to support a healthy, regular menstrual cycle, reduce symptoms of menopause and peri-menopause, including mood swings and hot flashes.

General health and disease prevention
As an adaptogen and tonic, maca may boost your overall health in a number of ways. It supplies iron and helps restore red blood cells, which aids in avoiding anemia and cardiovascular diseases. Maca is also believed to promote prostate health. The nutrients in maca have long been valued for keeping bones and teeth healthy and help heal wounds more quickly.

Manly Maca Chocolate Smoothie

Serves 2

2 cups almond milk, unsweetened
1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted
1 frozen banana
1 teaspoon maca powder, gelatinized
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 pinch black pepper or cayenne pepper (optional)

Heat almond milk and coconut oil in a saucepan.

Add all ingredients to blender and blend until frothy.

Serve and enjoy a cup with your significant other!

Tip: Adding cayenne pepper is a traditional South American way to add a bit of spice to chocolatey foods and drinks. This is also great served as a hot chocolate.
